Installing On Windows

Quick Note. I had nothing to do with the creation of the Windows build. You can thank Elizabeth for this. I just provide these instructions... just in case. "But Bob," you might inquire, "what about Gnope?" Well, as of the writing of this document, Gnome was still old, outdated, and I also hold special opinions about it. Installing PHP-GTK this way gives you the most up-to-date build for Windows out there, and your system remains in a state I like to call "not tainted".

Step One: Download this ZIP file: php-gtk-2.0.0-win32-nts.zip.

This ZIP file has everything needed to run a PHP-GTK2 application. In a lot of ways this will be ten times easier than what we have to do on Linux.

Step Two: Extract that ZIP file.

Extract the contents of that ZIP file to 'C:\Program Files'. When you do this you will get a new directory, 'C:\Program Files\php-gtk', I would strongly suggest renaming it to 'C:\Program Files\PHP-GTK2'.

Step Three: Tell Windows what to do with dot phpg or phpw files.

Find a .phpg or .phpw file (or both) in a PHP-GTK app, or create one. Navigate to it in Explorer. Right click it, and if "Open With..." is an option choose it, else just choose "Open".

Choose 'I will select what program to use to open this file'.

Click the browse button at the bottom of the new window that should appear asking what program you want to use to run this file. Browse to 'C:\Program Files\PHP-GTK2' and choose the 'php-win.exe'. Be sure the "Always use this program" checkbox is checked, and then click OK.

Now you should be able to double-click phpg or phpw files like normal exe files.

Step Four: Done.

Currently there is a graphical glitch in GTK 2.12 on Windows on some widgets. If this bothers you, check out my notes on PHP-GTK 2.0.0.
